PROLOGUE: "Nothing happens to me
"
London, England, 2010. On a cold winter's night, half of the city slept soundly in their beds, while the other half roamed around the urban jungle. But one, one who, to many, would seem another normal Londoner, was having the worst night of his life. Asleep in bed, or at least trying to be, his past was haunting him constantly. He wasn't a criminal, he wasn't a terrorist; he was a soldier, fighting proudly for his country. But afterwards, life is never the same. And for John Watson, life certainly was never going to be the same again. Not after what he saw.
Every night, he would have nightmares of gunfire, of comrades dashing across the Afghan heat, of homes being kicked down, his friends being killed in cold blood, and him, clasping his ears, wishing it would stop. And every night, he would hear the voices of those he lost, calling to him in the night
..
"WATSON!!!......"
And when they came, he snapped. He would wake up in a cold sweat, terrified beyond imagination. Being a military man, he quickly learned how to cope with this, but it always took time to come back to normality. After that, it was a little bit easier to sleep, but it still felt like the longest night in the world.
One morning, he woke up, again having a terrible night, and prepared some breakfast, a cup of tea and an apple. He took his laptop out from his desk drawer, where he also kept this army pistol. He turned it on and looked blankly at the screen in front of him. This is what it read
THE PERSONAL BLOG OF Dr. John H. Watson.
You are now logged in as "John Watson".
And then a blank page.
"How's your blog going?"
"Fine."
John Watson was an army doctor for the war in Afghanistan. He was loyal to the bitter end, but one day, after receiving an injury to his shoulder, he was invalided home and given early retirement. Because of his injury, he was appointed to a therapist for his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. And now was on one of his regular visits.
After giving a little cough, John repeated his answer.
"You haven't written a word have you?" Ella, his therapist asked.
"You just wrote 'Still has trust issues.'"
"And you read my writing upside down. See what I mean?"
John reluctantly agreed with her as a fool only argues with his doctor. Trying to reassure him, she posted the idea of his blog back in his head. "John, you're a soldier, and it's going to take you a while to adjust back into civilian life; and writing a blog about everything that happens to you will honestly help you."
Then, in four simple words, he would change his life, as he told Ella why he would not write his blog
"Nothing happens to me
"
